Oman weather varies from region to region. In most cases however, heat remains the operative word. Especially during the long summer season Oman weather is truly pushed to its limits with temperatures occasionally soaring to a sizzling 49C. As the largest part of the country falls within the desert region, weather in Oman is also renewed by the conspicuous absence of rain.

In the coastal areas of the sultanate, Omar weather is typically hot and humid in summer, becoming dry in most parts of the interior. However in some higher locations of the interior, weather retains a more temperate disposition throughout the year, veering towards more pleasant patterns in the southern region of the country, where heavy monsoon rains are a comparatively frequent occurrence, especially between June and September.

Located in the southern region of Oman, Dhofar is the country’s most fertile area, thanks to the impact of the southwest monsoon which brings along heavier rainfall and keeps streams constantly running. On the coasts as well as the interior plains, precipitation falls mainly during winter, fluctuating between 20 to 100mm per year. Understandably, the mountainous areas, and most specifically Al Jabal al Akhdar, enjoy higher rainfall which can reach to 900mm per year.

Summer rolls in around mid-April, bringing along a significant increase in temperature. Oman weather conditions are at their worst in the interior part of the sultanate; readings of a scorching 53 °C (occasionally even higher) are anything but an uncommon incurrence! And believe it or not, these readings are taken under shade! In comparison, heat is relatively more bearable on the Al Batinah plain. However, with highs of around 47 °C conditions remain unfavorable to those uninitiated to the peculiarities of Oman weather. To make matters even worse, humidity often peaks at 90% thanks to the area’s low elevation.

On the upside, weather patterns are more pleasant in Muscat, where mean summer temperature hovers around 33 °C. However, temperatures in towns on the Gulf of Oman can rise by anything between 6 °C  to 10 °C when the strong wind known locally as the gharbi (literally, western) blows in from the Rub al Khali. In June, temperatures in the coastal area of Oman drop to around 38 or 40C. Unfortunately this also heralds an increasing in humidity making weather in Oman’s coast truly unbearable.

In sharp contrast, winter conditions are nothing short of superb. Commencing in mid November and lasting until mid May, winter along the coast is characterized by pleasant temperatures; highs usually oscillate around 20C and lows never dip below 13C.  Clouds are few and scattered and daytime is usually blessed with abundant sunshine; night’s are usually cooler thanks to an almost permanent light breeze.
